New and Old Christmas Traditions

When I was young, christmas was magical. My childhood home looked like a Hallmark movie threw up in it. The beds had special holiday bedding. There was a christmas tree in every room. Decorations and lights were everywhere and my brother and I enjoyed every second of it.

For me November 1st was the day all the christmas decorations went up and it still is. Now that both kids are getting older they are more help decorating the tree. Just like me, they are excited seeing all the decorations go up. Though a lot of my christmas decor got lost in the move, we still have enough to bring out the holiday spirit.

This year we are donating cookies to our church and we will be experiencing our first advent calendar. We also having a hanging montessori both the kids can decorate as many times as they want without breaking all of my ornaments on the big tree.

We will be continuing our christmas cookie tradition for santa and our elf on the shelf. However, I’m not sure how I feel about all the different activities the elf does overnight. When I was little all my elf did was move and me and my brother would go look for him every morning. I like the simplicity of that method. Who has the energy to get creative every night. I’m barely alive at 8pm.

For now my kids are too young but when they get older and ask why our elf doesn’t stir up mischief at night time like the other elves. I will say “Our elf is old he can’t move like he used to.”

What christmas traditions do you have? Have you added anything new? What is your stance on The Elf on the Shelf?
