A child with ADHD can struggle with listening, sitting still, and learning. I am not an expert and I am still learning myself but these are small things that have helped my child.
Note: I am a big believer in everyone is different. There is not one way to tackle a problem. There a plenty of books and treatment plans but that doesn’t mean that will fix everything for every child.
Tip one: Keep a consistent schedule. My child needs structure. Whenever structure is broken her listening skills go out the window.
Tip Two: Limit TV or screen time. Alternative activities include, learning workbooks, books, flash cards, and board games.
Tip Three: Create responsibility. She is given a chore everyday and is responsible for getting dressed and showered. My goal is to show her independence but also show her actions have words.
Tip Four: Praise positive behavior.
Tip Five: Take breaks. When she starts acting out she needs to take a break. Whether it is sitting in her room or taking a timeout. She needs a moment to calm down.
Tip Six: Breathing Techniques. When she can’t calm down I have her breath in her nose and out her mouth.
Tip Seven: Redirecting High Energy. When she starts getting too excited we redirect into a different activity before she gets too out of control.
Tip Eight: Spend time outdoors. She loves parks, the pool and the beach. Even just a walk helps with the energy.
There are many other tips out there for children with ADHD but these have been helping her slowly.
